Thai companies pivot towards renewables and regulatory resilience amid market turbulence

यह ख़बर हमारी न्यूज़ डेस्क से अंग्रेज़ी में आई है।

Thai equities faced a mixed session with regulatory scrutiny and environmental disruptions highlighting the sector's evolving strategies, from power-sector expansion to diversification and resilience in a challenging market environment.

Thai equities opened the session with a scatter of corporate headlines that ranged from regulatory pressure and airline disruption to a flurry of power-sector dealmaking and a new push into property-related finance. The day’s news sat against a weaker market backdrop, with investors already on edge over flood disruption in Bangkok and surrounding provinces, but the individual company updates told a more pointed story about how Thai listed groups are trying to manage growth, capital and, in some cases, survival.

AKS Corporation was among the more troubled names after the exchange told its board to remedy an incomplete audit committee, raising the prospect of further trading suspension if the company fails to comply. The issue matters because AKS is already in a fragile position after years of losses, and the market has effectively priced it as a distressed micro-cap. For investors, the immediate question is no longer about expansion or earnings momentum, but whether the company can satisfy basic governance requirements before regulatory pressure intensifies further.

By contrast, Electricity Generating, or EGCO, continued to signal balance-sheet discipline and a shift towards high-quality overseas assets. The company said it had acquired a 49% stake in the Wheatsborough Solar project in Ohio, a 125 MW facility that began commercial operation in August 2025 and is backed by a long-term offtake arrangement with an investment-grade counterparty. EGCO said the deal lifts its renewable capacity to about 1,785 MW, or roughly 26% of total equity capacity, and follows a series of recent US transactions, including stakes in Rhode Island State Energy Center, the Compass portfolio and Astoria Energy II. Taken together, those purchases show a clear preference for contracted cash flow in the American power market rather than more speculative greenfield bets.

Gunkul Engineering, meanwhile, is deepening an already rapid expansion in renewables. The company has signed additional power purchase agreements with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand covering 261.8 MW, taking its renewable portfolio beyond 2.1 GW and bringing it to its 2027 target ahead of schedule. It is also restructuring its partnership with Gulf Development into a 50:50 joint venture aimed at a 3 GW pipeline by 2030. Gulf, for its part, bought 50% of seven Gunkul project companies for 466.5 million baht, giving the larger utility exposure to 336.7 MW of equity capacity across 12 solar and wind sites. The arrangement underlines how Thailand’s power groups are increasingly using joint ventures and project-level transactions to manage capital intensity while keeping a foot in the next wave of renewable development.

Elsewhere, MMM Capital is trying to broaden its identity beyond a property sales platform. The company is pushing a “Jump+” property-finance strategy through HAC, with a target of building a 700 million baht credit book by 2028. That would move MMM closer to a mezzanine-style property finance role, at least in spirit, even if its core business remains tied to sales commissions and residential transactions rather than a traditional lending franchise. Investors will likely want to see whether the new direction can produce consistent returns without taking the company too far from the operational discipline that brought it to market in the first place.

Plan B Media also drew attention after saying it is taking a stake in iCare, a handset-insurance business pitched around expensive smartphones and consumer demand for instalment-style protection. The move extends a pattern of diversification that has already taken the advertising group beyond its core out-of-home media operations, and it raises the question of how far the company is willing to stretch its brand and capital into adjacent businesses. Finally, Thai Airways cancelled 14 domestic and international flights on 29 and 30 September because of flooding in Bangkok and nearby areas, a reminder that the weather disruption already affecting roads and public services is beginning to bite into transport schedules too. The airline said it was adding staff and resources to handle the resulting backlog, but the episode also showed that while airports remain open, Thailand’s wider logistics network is not yet operating normally.
